08: A Book That Scares Me

Dark-Matter-jacket-200x315Dark Matter by Michelle Paver

I don’t really get scared by books – most likely because I don’t tend to read scary books. Scary films are great, I can watch them every day. I get suitably scared and then I get over it. Scary books generally don’t appeal to me. The genre just doesn’t beckon to me. Also, when a book scares me, I tend to get scared and stay scared, or at least jumpy, for about a day.

I hope this doesn’t put anyone off reading Dark Matter, because it is a truly amazing novel. Even if you are of a delicate constitution, read it in the daytime with all the lights on, all the doors locked. I made the mistake of reading it at night, in a creaky noisy house. The writing is superb, and both the landscape and the ‘ghost’ are so vividly portrayed.

Would you rather read a scary book or watch a scary film?

07: A Book That I Can Quote By Heart

When I was younger, my friends and I could recite huge chunks of the Harry Potter novels to each other. Now, I don’t think that I could quote a single line from Harry Potter if I tried. Years of studying literature have taught me to memorise useful lines from novels, poems and plays – and to forget them once they are no longer useful in order to make room for new things. Which is why I still write down phrases that excite me, and why I won’t remember that quote the next day when I’ve had to think about something else.

The last novels that I did a particularly good job of memorising were The Bell Jar and Play It As It Lays. For a module in Modern American Women’s Writing, I decided that I wanted to write my exam on these two books. We got to see the exam paper beforehand and I picked a question relating to mental and physical illness. Then I spent weeks reading the books, highlighting pertinent passages, copying them out onto paper, copying them onto a Word document, printing out the Word document and highlighting them again, then copying them numerous times onto more sheets of paper and eventually condensed them so they would fit onto a few flashcards. What I ended up with was about 70% of each novel, along with a smattering of critical quotations, committed to memory. I aced the exam – of course. Then promptly forgot it all when I had to start studying for another module. If I still had those trusty flashcards, though, I bet I could have a go at reciting at least one of the novels.

English students – you know what I’m talking about, right?

Any books that you know off by heart?

06: Favourite Young Adult Book

last_chanceLast Chance by Sarah Dessen

I got a free copy of this with J17 when I was quite a bit younger than 17. I started reading it that night, and finished it within days. Then I read it again. I have honestly lost count of the amount of times I’ve read this book over the years. I still have the same copy and occasionally flick through it. I think I read it at exactly the right time in my life, and that’s why it still resonates with me now. When I first read it, I could relate to one of the characters, and I idolised another of the characters.  It’s not exactly a novel that I would recommend, as it’s not what I usually enjoy, but it’s become something of a comfort blanket to me. When I’m feeling miserable, a lazy flick through this book will always cheer me up – as cheesy as that might sound. It’s not even a guilty pleasure, it’s somehow become a cherished keepsake, even though if I saw it in a bookshop now I wouldn’t give it a second look.

Do you have any books like this – that you enjoy reading it because you’ve attached strong emotions to it?

Day 30 – A photograph of yourself today + three good things that have happened in the past 30 days

I am currently without a camera that does anything other than splutter when I press the on button (best time to start a blog, eh?) so no can do for a picture of me on this very day. What I can give you is this-

That is, of course, me as Marie Curie. You can tell by the sash, you see? I took part in an amazing play called A Pageant of Great Women. I ended up having to be Caroline Herschel as well as Marie Curie because of a lack of performers, but since all I had to do is read a few lines about each woman this was no bother. Hopefully my little sister will be pleased that I got to be an astronomer!

Now onto the three good things-

+ I saw both of my best friends Holly and Becci, saw my family, and Rich met my family for the first time

+ I got all of my essays finished and am hopefully on track to not fail my degree

+ I bought an Italian phrasebook for 50p that offers such gems as ‘Che bel completo da sci!’ (I like your ski outfit!) and ‘Dobbiamo stare attenti a causa dell’aids’ (We have to be careful about AIDS).

This month has been quite stressful at times because of my workload so it’s been nice to reflect on what I enjoyed, rather than what made me panic or made me upset, so I might start doing a ’3 good things’ post at the end of every week, to help me put a positive spin on my own life.

Day 29 – Something you could never get tired of doing.

Procrastinating!

I can procrastinate and read blogs when I’m meant to be writing an essay.

I can procrastinate and tidy my room when I’m meant to be reading blogs.

I can procrastinate and have a shower when I’m meant to be tidying my room.

I can procrastinate and eat when I’m meant to be having a shower.

I can procrastinate and watch telly when I’m meant to be eating.

Then I can procrastinate and write my essay when I’m meant to be watching telly!

Everything gets done eventually and I often work best under pressure and that I do more work overall when I spend a day at home writing essays, where I can watch tv, lie in bed, and mess about to my heart’s content, than when I’m in the library with no distractions. Don’t know why but I’m not going to question it!
