What Emily Did Next

Read, reading, to read

I’ve just finished reading The Flood by David Maine. It is, put simply, a retelling of the story of Noah’s Ark. Despite this, I did not read it as a ‘religious novel’. The story was fascinating, even though I obviously knew what was going to happen, the characters were well-developed and surprisingly relatable, and the relationships portrayed were realistic and sometimes slightly touching. I would recommend it to a friend, but would be careful to point out that it is not a preachy religious novel. I gave it 4/5 stars.

I’ve just picked up When God Was A Rabbit by Sarah Winman. I really enjoy it so far and have found it strangely reminiscent of The Wrong Boy by Willy Russell, which I loved.

Next I’m hoping to read If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things by Jon Mcgregor, after trying and failing a few years ago.

A book I have abandoned is A Short History of Tractors in Ukranian. I can’t even be bothered to remember the author’s name. I couldn’t get past about 50 pages before I was so painfully bored I had to give up. I don’t know what it was about it that apparently a lot of people loved (according to the praise on the book cover) but I definitely didn’t love, but there was something about the writing style that irked me, making me think that if the narrator were a real person talking to me I might have to make my excuses and leave.

Add me on Goodreads!

  • Have you read any of these books?
  • What’s the best book you’ve read lately?
  • Do you feel guilty about giving up on a book, or are you glad to move onto something you enjoy more?
